A Siena wedding will allow you to enjoy one of the largest Tuscan cities that retain a distinctively Medieval air and offer you the best opportunity to slip into the rhythms and atmosphere of the Tuscan Middle Ages.
Siena is a medieval city of brick. This cityscape hides dozens of Gothic palaces and pastry shops galore, unseen neighborhood rivalries and altarpieces of unsurpassed beauty. During the Middle Ages Siena flourished artistically; for two centuries (13th and 14th) the Sienese school, represented by Duccio da Boninsegna, Simone Martini and the Lorenzetti brothers, rivaled the Florentine masters as the most important in Italy.
Siena is also world wide famous for the astonishing Medieval equestrian challenge little changed since the 1300's: The Palio. Every July 2nd and August 15th the 17 neighborhoods (Contrade) challenge each other to a race around the campo (central Piazza del Campo) of Siena as a peaceful means of settling rivalries, or so it once was. The day and the night before the event the neighborhoods are alive with crowds walking through singing competitive songs, waving flags and generally full of hope for a race that has not come to pass. That night dinners are set up in the streets - long tables are placed for the neighborhoods and their racer to have a celebration of the race to come.
